With a declining population, there are thought to be 25,000-39,000 lions left in the wild. Lions are threatened by loss of habitat to population growth and agricultural expansion, as well as being poisoned by livestock ranchers.

Because of the habitat pressure on lions, they have broken up into small isolated populations, which leads to inbreeding. The African lion is listed by the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable, and it is therefore considered to be facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.
