Local Ocean Trust (LOT) is a marine conservation organisation committed to the protection of the Kenyan marine environment, with a focus on the Watamu area, working with local communities in programmes of education, hands-on conservation, community development, research and campaigning. Watamu Turtle Watch is LOT's flagship project encompassing the turtle conservation work. We are looking for a volunteer to carry out our marketing and volunteer management in situ and to train a local counterpart for 6 - 12 months
Programmes include:
Research and conservation related to: turtle nesting, turtle release from fishing nets, turtle exploitation and mortalities, rehabilitation of sick and injured turtles, mangrove reforestation, destructive fishing practices; coral reef, creek and intertidal marine ecosystems.
Education on marine conservation to national, local (especially schools and fishermen) and tourist targets through media, field visits, work shops and our Marine Education Centre; also advising other national and local marine conservation efforts.
Community development - capacity building in community conservation groups (set up by LOT) and assisting on sustainable and alternative income development eg. Eco-friendly mariculture, crafts, eco-tourism.
Campaigning on a range of local and national marine destructive practices.
Job role: Marketing of volunteer program and coordinate volunteers on projects
Duties and Responsibilities
Coordinate and manage both local and international volunteer programs
Devise in conjunction with staff volunteer work programs
Market the volunteer program to international and local agents and other target audience.
Supervise volunteers on projects.
Liaise with potential and incoming volunteers before and after arrival.
Update and maintain volunteer database
Prepare and present presentations to both volunteers and agents
Participate in Local Ocean Trust conservation activities
Training of local counterpart in volunteer management and marketing
Applicant Requirements
Essential
Significant volunteer management experience
Experience working with international clients.
Experience in marketing and program development
Understanding of gap year and volunteer travel organisations
Experience in office admin, accounts.
Excellent people skills
Excellent organisational and time management skills
Fluent in English language
Clean driving licence
Desirable
Interest and or experience in marine conservation
Oral and PowerPoint presentation skills
Knowledge of Kenya's laws governing volunteering
