The Nature’s Valley Trust (NVT) is a registered non-profit conservation organisation (025-306-NPO) based in Nature’s Valley (near Plettenberg Bay) on the Tsitsikamma Coast.

The NVT, which has been in operation since 2001, was initiated by the Nature’s Valley community and its mission  is:  “To maintain the long term environmental integrity of Nature’s Valley and surrounds by becoming proactively involved in issues that impact on the future of the area”.

In order to fulfil its mission, the NVT initiates, facilitates and implements various programmes that include research, conservation, environmental education and community awareness projects which focus on Nature’s Valley and the surrounding areas. These activities are designed to contribute to the conservation value of the area which lies within a national park; to complement the activities of conservation authorities specifically in the areas of environmental education and community outreach; and to play a key role in ensuring that proposed development and human activities are appropriate and sustainable and that environmental impact is minimized.  The NVT currently employs one full-time programme director. 

The NVT, with funding and support from the Table Mountain Fund of WWF-SA in collaboration with the C.A.P.E. Capacity Development Programme hosted by SANBI, invites Young Professionals to apply for a structured two year mentoring programme.  The aim of the programme is to support the orientation, growth and development of young, conservation graduates through their transition from the formal learning context into the real world of conservation. 

The Programme will involve a 3 month induction programme into the conservation sector and the NVT where after (for the following 21 months) the successful candidate will have the specific objectives of focussing on the NVT’s Environmental Education (EE) and Community Awareness (CA) programmes and projects. 

The main areas the intern will focus on are the following:

●    Assist in the evaluation, co-ordination and development of the NVT EE programmes and CA projects;
●    Assist in the planning and running of educational holiday programmes during April and December;
●    Assist in the publishing of 3 newsletters a year;
●    Assist in the updating of the NV EE Manual, Eco-guideline series of brochures and booklets and CA resources;
●    Assist in identifying, developing, facilitating, fundraising and implementing  new EE and CA projects;
●    Assist in fundraising (Identify funders, prepare proposals and write reports.)
●    Assist in developing and maintain an extensive extended Network of contacts and organisations;

The following skills will be beneficial for the position:

●    Good, broad environmental knowledge;
●    Excellent writing skills (preferably English and Afrikaans);
●    Good computer skills (Word, Excel, Corel, e-mail and internet);
●    A valid Code 8 drivers licence;
●    Ability to communicate in English and Afrikaans;
●    Good co-ordination and facilitation skills;
●    Good ‘people skills’.

The student will operate from the office in Nature’s Valley and will need their own transport (any travel done on behalf of the Trust will be compensated for). 

Private transport and accommodation are not included in the intern position placement.
