International Rivers Network
About International Rivers Network's (IRN) Africa work : Southern Africa is, by and large, a dry place. Water is perhaps the region's most precious resource--the source of life itself. And yet the region's life-giving source of water--rivers and their catchments--are increasingly under threat from ill-conceived development schemes. International Rivers Network first began working in Southern Africa in the early 1990s on the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP), the largest infrastructure project under construction on the continent. Since then, the scope of IRN's work in the region has expanded to also include river and dam issues in South Africa, Uganda, Namibia, the Zambezi Basin and other river basins. They work with grassroots groups working to protect their rivers and communities from large scale development projects. Regionally, IRN is working with a network of civil society organizations committed to the sustainable management of river and water resources in Southern Africa.
