The Friedkin Conservation Fund (FCF) is a non-governmental organization that supports Wildlife Department anti-poaching efforts in Tanzania. FCF has also instigated a series of community awareness and development programs that focus on rural communities living in and around wildlife rich areas. FCF is funded through donations from TGTS hunting clients, the Friedkin family, various Safari Clubs and private and institutional benefactors. As part of its agreement with Tanzania Game Trackers Safaris Ltd., FCF provides anti-poaching support in areas where TGTS operate their safaris. During the past five years, FCF have maintained a permanent presence in Maswa Game Reserve next to the Serengeti National Park. The Maswa project has acted as a launch pad for FCF's ambitious mobile anti-poaching operations. The project involved the creation of a well equipped, well trained and effectively managed professional mobile unit with good communications and defined operating procedures. Over the last nine years that the FCF has been involved in Maswa Game Reserve they have collected and destroyed over 23,000 wire cable snares and caught over 700 poachers. It is quite interesting to note that 23,000 snares equates to around 138,000 animals as each snare has a bush life of 2 years and conservative estimates reckon that a snare can catch up to 3 animals a year.
