Kenya Birds
Kenya Birds. Many people think of Kenya purely in terms of its lions, leopards and elephants but, with nearly 1,100 species it has a lot to offer birders of all sorts, from serious twitchers to casual observers. Its diverse geography which includes a bit of everything - volcanic plains, hot springs and soda lakes, desert, evergreen coastal, cool montane and intermediate rain forest plus the grassy plains of the Maasai Mara - makes Kenya a birders paradise. Some species, like the Sokoke Scops-Owl (which was only discovered in 1966), are found nowhere else in the world. Added to this, its popularity as a destination for big game watching and traditional safaris means that Kenya has an excellent network of good lodges, campsites and other accommodation. It also has a wealth of companies who provide overland tours and excursions. Kenya's the place to go if you enjoy a spot of comfort with your bird watching. Paul and Helen Harris have put together a wonderfully informative site which includes many, many photos and lists of species in the different regions of Kenya.
