The presence of Seals was first recorded by Vasco Da Gama on his first voyage, at Mossel Bay. In 1591 seafarers became aware of great numbers of seals on Robben Island, which was named after these animals. In 1604 Sir Henry Middleton found, 'Such infinite number of seals that it was admirable to behold! All the sea-shore lies overspread with them,… thousands.'

Seal Alert SA is privately working to address the welfare, mismanagement and imbalances that currently exist in the Marine Environment along the Southern African Coastline. Particular emphasis on the Cape Fur Seal. Additionally Seal Alert SA is in the process of establishing South Africa's first in the Wild Seal Rescue and Rehabilitation facility. It has the 1st Dedicated Seal Rescue, High Speed response craft in operation in the Cape Peninsula.
