Wildlife Research Centre of Sudan

The Wildlife Research Centre (WRC) of the Ministry of Science and Technology deals with monitoring and research aspects of wildlife. The objectives of The Wildlife Research Center (established in 1975) are:

  • Conduct reconnaissance surveys of wildlife resources in all parts of the Sudan and exploration of new sites with viable wildlife populations or with suitable habitats capable of supporting wildlife. Recommendation will be made as to the protection of these areas and their declarations as national parks or other protected areas and recommend sustainable development projects.
  • Periodical surveys in protected areas to monitor the changes in population and/or habitat and to recommend actions required to achieve the management objectives.
  • Monitor the changes in the population of different wildlife species and make the necessary adjustment to the level of protection conferred on each species. This follows the schedule which categorizes different wildlife species on the basis of abundance.
  • Conduct research to improve the habitat for wildlife in the national parks and game reserves and to give advice concerning reclamation of disturbed land around these areas.
  • The adoption of a multidisciplinary approach encompassing research on forestry, range and socio-economical studies of the local community due to their direct impact on the wildlife resources.
  • Enhance knowledge and disseminate information on the importance of sustained development to the conservation of the environment and the wildlife resources.
  • Renovate the existing system of management of the wildlife resources by the establishment of an information network and the application of modern technology and information system.

The The Wildlife Research Center enjoys favorable working relation with the Sudanese Environment Conservation Society, Wildlife and Environment Conservation Administration, National Research center, Remote Sensing Authority, Plan Sudan Organization, UNESCO, University of Khartoum and the Institute of Environmental studies, University of Juba and University of Sennar.
