West African Association for Marine Environment (WAAME)

Founded in 1995, WAAME is a multidisciplinary organisation whose objective is to take part in, provoke and develop, through appropriate supervision, the baseline initiatives of populations involving issues relativing to the rational use of natural resources and to the conservation of the environment in marine and coastal areas.

WAAME performs integrated and community-based management activities in mangrove ecosystems. Hence at WAAME, the three-year assistance project to a community-based management of the natural resources of the mangrove forests in the Saloum Delta Biosphere Reserve-Senegal, funded by the European Commission, in partnership with a Belgian NGO (ADG), is being implemented.

The project develops the mangrove forests (forest development, regeneration, etc.), increases the value of resources (processing of sea products), gives assistance to the economic groups (organisation management, institutional support, capacity building, etc.) and offers technological innovation (pisciculture, aquaculture, introduction of improved ovens, etc.) in the District of Foundiougne (Rural communities of Toubacouta, Bassoul, Djirnda and Djilor).
