Campfire - Communal Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources - brings the land into the foreground. More than just a shift in perspective, Campfire gives people an alternative to destructive uses of the land by making wildlife a valuable resource.
Wildlife, in fact, is the most economically and ecologically sound land use in much of Zimbabwe. Through Campire, Zimbabwe seeks to involve rural communities in conservation and development. Zimbabwe falls within the biotic zone known as South Savanna Woodland and the country is classified into five agro-ecological regions based on soil characteristics and railfall; the evolution of Campfire has been affected by these ecological factors and the juxtaposition of wildlife protected areas and communal lands.
Since it started in 1989, more than a quarter of a million rural Zimbabweans have begun managing their natural resources and guiding their own development through Campfire.
