Conservation
Birds | Peregrine Fund |
Much of Africa's habitat and its wildlife is threatened by overpopulation and unsustainable use of natural resources by poor people. Raptors are no exception; over 100 species either breed in Africa or migrate there each winter from Europe and Asia. Conservation of far ranging species like raptors and other migratory birds presents special problems to biologists. How do we protect animals that range so far and need widely dispersed habitats in which to survive?
Established in 1970, The Peregrine Fund works nationally and internationally, to conserve birds of prey in nature. We conserve nature by achieving results--results restoring species in jeopardy, conserving habitat, educating students, training conservationists, providing factual information to the public, and by accomplishing good science. We succeed through cooperation and hard-work, using common sense, being hands-on and non-political, and by emphasizing solutions.
The goal of the Pregrine Fund's Pan Africa Raptor Conservation Program is to help stem the loss of biodiversity in Africa. Protected areas contribute to this goal, but by themselves will likely not be enough; wide-ranging raptors must also survive in human-dominated landscapes. By attempting to meet the ecological needs of raptors we can reasonably expect to also save significant portions of biodiversity in the food chain below them.
