West Africa Rainforest Network (WARN). Centuries ago, a vast forest stretched across the entire continent of Africa, from Guinea to Kenya. In West Africa, from Guinea to Cameroon, a plethora of creatures wandered through an almost primordial landscape. Today, over ninety percent of West Africas original forest is gone; only a small fraction of that magnificent forest survives. And without immediate action, that, too will be lost.forever. The West Africa Rainforest Networkprovides international support to West African community-based organizations protecting the rainforests in which they live. Today, fires and farms continue to shrink the jungles borders, and logging and hunting strike at its heart. Illegal loggers continue their unrelenting attack on the forest. An estimated ninety percent of trees felled in Cross River are cut illegally. The horrific consequences of unregulated commercial logging are well known, but the Nigerian logging poses an even greater danger than the loss of habitat. New logging roads open areas of the rainforests that had been previously inaccessible, providing easy access for commercial hunters. The widespread commercial slaughter of wild animals to provide bushmeat for urban and international markets is the most significant immediate threat to the future of African wildlife.
