Coastal Environmental Trust of Namibia

The Coastal Environmental Trust of Namibia is a non-government organisation, which aims to promote sustainable development, to conserve the fragile coastal wetlands and desert environment and to promote environmental education, awareness and understanding.

We formed in November 1996 as the Environmental Action Group, initially to try to save the Walvis Bay Lagoon. To do this we decided that we should have a public workshop with prominent speakers on our environment and law and to get the public involved and interested in their environment. The workshop was an unqualified success. We later changed our name to the "Coastal Environmental Trust of Namibia" and registered ourselves as an NGO.

Objectives

  1. To conserve the coastal environment of Namibia, in particular the Swakopmund / Walvis Bay area
  2. Conservation of the biodiversity and natural ecosystems of our coastal wetlands
  3. To educate and create a public awareness of the value of our coastal wetlands, our desert environment and their sustainable use
  4. To foster public appreciation of the sea and animal life along our coast
  5. To promote the wise and ethical use of natural resources, in the Namibian coastal area
  6. To promote environmental awareness, with all developments along our coastal area
  7. To encourage environmental and ecological research.
