Food and Trees for Africa, previously Trees for Africa, has become South Africa's premier non profit greening organisation over the past decade. The organisation started out distributing trees to disadvantaged communities and, being small, dynamic and responsive, moved with the changes in South Africa. Greening activities expanded to include the development of urban greening policy, environmental awareness and education programmes, and the implementation of parks, nurseries and food gardens. Over the past five years they have evolved into the focal organisation for Permaculture food gardening running a national schools' Permaculture programme, Eskom EduPlant, workshops for thousands of educators, facilitators for more than 60 food gardens with pensioners, the unemployed and schools throughout South Africa and publishers of educational material around food gardening.
