Friends of Conservation
Friends of Conservation (FOC) was founded in 1982 - initially to preserve the decimated populations of Black Rhino and elephants in East Africa. FOC's community based conservation programmes played a prominent part in the protection of these animals. Using experience gained in East Africa FOC participates in projects around the world where local communities share their natural habitat and eco-systems with threatened wildlife. The nature of FOC's projects includes; Support for anti-poaching campaigns, Reforestation, Providing veterinary supplies, Monitoring and Researching Wildlife, Community Conservation Training, School Conservation Clubs, Tourist Education and Co-ordinating projects with other conservation groups. Some of FOC's most important projects involve training local people in the importance of conservation and conservation techniques. This often starts in schools with the setting up of conservation clubs both in the UK and abroad. FOC believes that educating children in wildlife and conservation issues is essential for preserving wildlife for future generations. FOC remains dedicated to providing support to community based conservation programmes, particularly where the local people benefit from working to preserve their environment. It is essential to demonstrate that the presence and conservation of wildlife and eco-systems will have tangible benefits for local communities.
