Owens Foundation, The
In 1986 Delia and Mark Owens - now of the Owens Foundation for Wildlife Conservation - began a study of carnivores in the remote North Luangwa National Park, an almost inaccessible wilderness. They soon found that gangs of commercial poachers were quickly sterilizing the park, killing as many as 1,000 elephants each year for their ivory. For the next 11 years, the couple developed the Project, which saved the park for the benefit of the wildlife and the people living near it. In 1997 Delia and Mark turned over their North Luangwa Conservation Project to the Frankfurt Zoological Society which continues the wildlife research and anti-poaching work. Local Zambians, Hammer Simwinga and Albert Chilambwe continue NLCP's village outreach programs with some assistance from the Owens Foundation. Mark and Delia are still analysing their elephant data.
