S.A.V.E. is an acronym for Save the Vaal Environment. S.A.V.E. is dedicated to the protection of a valuable wetland next to the Vaal River. S.A.V.E. is a non-profit organisation which has, principally, among its objectives "To protect and maintain the environmental integrity of the Vaal River and its environs for current and future generations with specific focus on the area between Letaba Weir and the Barrage. S.A.V.E. was formed in response to Sasol's proposed development of an open cast strip mine astride the Rietspruit and its 1800 ha wetland. S.A.V.E. say, should this mine eventuate it would have disastrous effects.
