The Libanona Ecology Center (LEC) was established on the Libanona Peninsula on the edge of Fort Dauphin in 1995 by a group of ecologists and conservation practitioners. LEC was created with the objective to train regional students and professionals in rural development, conservation and natural resource management to fulfil human resource needs in Southern Madagascar. Training programs for both current and future ecologists and conservation professionals, who are from the region, are essential to the successful implementation and sustainability of existing and future initiatives.
The objectives of the Libanona Ecology Centre are to:
(1) develop training programs for regional high school graduates and University students
(2) support the actions of rural development and conservation programs operating in the South through the development of communication and training programs (3) develop ecological training programs for diverse social groups in the South
(4) develop educational programs that reinforce the local cultural aspects and traditions favourable to environmental management
(5) serve as a regional environmental documentation and resource centre for other institutions and NGOs working in the south
(6) contribute to regional development programs, both public and private, through ecological monitoring and technical support on the maintenance of ecosystems
