Explorer | Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage |
The Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage was founded in 1983 by David and Sheila Siddle, a British couple who operate a cattle ranch near the copperbelt town of Chingola. The Orphanage has saved dozens of chimpanzees from certain death.
The Siddles bestow love and care upon the traumatized apes - many of whom have been confiscated from poachers, rescued from dilapidated zoos and circuses, or repatriated from as far away as Russia and Haiti - and gradually introduce them to the extended family at Chimfunshi.
Three social groups inhabit the 30-acre orphanage, and the Siddles' success rate is astounding: in fact, 14 chimpanzees have been born at Chimfunshi since 1991.
You can make a contribution towards the Orphanage by adopting one of the 12 young chimps at the sanctuary.
For those who are genuinely interested in chimpanzees, a visit to the Orphanage can be arranged. Guests get a first-hand look at the Siddle's remarkable work, gain rare access to man's closest relative and earn a greater appreciation of life itself.
