The Blouberg Conservation Project strives to contribute towards the protection and conservation of the environment, ecosystems, biodiversity and endangered species of the Blouberg Mountain and surrounding areas through environmental education programmes and the implementation and maintenance of community-based conservation projects that benefit these communities, together with the collating of information gathered through associated research.

In the Limpopo Province of South Africa the Blouberg Mountain is an inselberg with the highest peak at 2051 metres. The altitude of the surrounding plains is approximately 900 metres, giving the Blouberg a relief displacement of over 1000 metres.

Surrounding the Blouberg are vast areas made up of both rural village communities and farming communities.

Due to the severe land degradation in these parts, we (Peter and Janine Snyman) considered this a prime target area, given the diversity of natural flora and fauna and the fact that little or no work had been done in this area with regard to conservation and environmental education.

In June 1993 we launched a NGO environmental education and conservation programme (not for profit) based in the Blouberg Nature Reserve to address the environmental problems and requirements facing this area.

Since then our project has developed into a multifaceted one with 5 primary objectives (see links for each of these above), namely:

• Environmental Education incorporating all facets of the environment and including all sectors of the community within the environs of the Blouberg as well as further afield,
• Blouberg Vulture Project that promotes the conservation of the endangered Cape Griffon (Vulture) together with that of other vulture species through community involvement,
• Blouberg Raptor Project that combines awareness & education amongst local communities about these vital predators,
• Blouberg Reptile Project that comprises a captive breeding programme and an awareness campaign aimed at the conservation of relative reptile species,
• Blouberg Scientific Research Base for international research teams.
