The Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust (CSWCT) is a Non-Governmental Organisation that was established in October, 1998 by a partnership of Local and International Conservation Organizations. Its purpose is the long-term care and welfare of confiscated orphaned chimpanzees from poachers and illegal traders with no chance of survival in the wild.
Before these chimpanzees are rescued, they undergo incredible hardship and suffering when taken out the wild by being kept individually in small cages or tied on chain with poor nutrition and medical care. Some witness horrible situations as their mothers and fathers are gunned down for bush meat and pet trade. By the time, the sanctuary receives these baby chimpanzees; some are in critical body conditions requiring a great deal of care to save their lives.
Chimpanzees naturally are social animals living in communities ranging from 20 to 100 individuals with complex social structures and norms.
CSCWT from the onset of sanctuary, devised means and programmes for the reception of rescued individuals, their care, rehabilitation and providing them companionship. CSWCT takes into consideration the physical and psychological well being of rescued chimpanzees in its program and the health and welfare of individual chimpanzee is of paramount importance.
