  Mission Statement
The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy works as a catalyst for the conservation of wildlife and its habitat.
It does this through the protection and management of species, the initiation and support of community conservation and development programmes, and the education of neighbouring areas in the value of wildlife.
Communities around Lewa.

Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust (NWCT)

The Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust is one of the most successful community conservation programmes in Kenya . It is run by Samburu communities in the rangeland around the spectacular Mathews Range to the north of Lewa.

With assistance from LWC, they have built up a community game guard system, eliminating elephant poaching from a wide area, and now generate revenue from their wildlife resources through Sarara Tented Camp. Although the project is still dependent on donor funding, this dependence is reducing over time.

LWC has historically helped the Samburu communities around the Mathews Range - about 100 km north of Lewa - to conserve their wildlife and improve their standard of living. With some donor funding, and logistic support from LWC, they have managed to create and manage their own foundation, the Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust (NWCT).

The unique feature of Namunyak is that the Trust is run by a board, democratically elected from the local community with each center having a Trustee on the board. The Board is the decision-making authority on all operational aspects of the Trust. The Trust headquarters are in Wamba Town , with the 15 community game guards operating within the Group Ranch under the supervision of the security manager.

The Trust operates a very effective VHF communication system linking the local community with the Kenya Wildlife Service and LWC. This system in conjunction with the commitment of the local community has reduced elephant poaching over the last five years to very low levels. A recent aerial count of the area counted 1530 elephant in the South Eastern Matthews.

The Trust has a five-year management and development plan, and has endorsement from many respected organisations, including the Kenya Wildlife Service and the US Fish & Wildlife Service.

Namunyak is home to one of Kenya 's most important and stable wild dog population, the progeny of which is now slowly restocking the Laikipia Plateau.
