hyaena (Hyaena brunnea) inside and outside conservation areas in South
Africa
 
The brown hyaena project is an internationally high profile project that the
proposed Director of studies has been working on over the last four years.
This PhD project will help to build on the knowledge already gained,
resulting in scientific research of international importance, and long term
benefits for hyaena conservation.

			
 
South Africa: Conservation Manager, De Mond Nature Reserve

De Mond Nature Reserve is situated 26 km south-east of Bredasdorp on the south-western Cape coast. The reserve lies at the mouth of the Heuningnes River, between the coastal villages of Arniston (Waenhuiskrans) and Struisbaai. De Mond is 954 ha in size, and comprises former sections of the farms Zoetendals Vallei and Bushy Park. It was proclaimed a nature reserve in 1986.

I am looking for a hard-working and motivated field research assistant to participate in a 6-month study examining Milne-Edwards Sifaka (Propithecus edwardsi) resource tracking in Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar. Ultimate goals of this project are to assess the impact of non-indigenous tree species on the feeding ecology and ranging patterns of lemur groups.

The Ndlovu Node of the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON)
gathers and analyses data on environmental change in the savanna biome of South Africa.
Together with WITS University and the Kruger National Park, the SAEON Ndlovu Node is
recruiting a post-doctoral scientist to analyze long-term data for protected areas and rural
areas in the lowveld region. The incumbent will register with the School of Animal, Plant
and Environmental Sciences (WITS) and work from the Node offices in the Kruger
National Park, Phalaborwa.

BirdLife South Africa (BLSA) is one of the largest, most active non-governmental conservation organisations in South Africa. An enthusiastic, responsible person with a keen interest in marine ornithology is required to join the Albatross Task Force team based in Cape Town. Duties will include recording seabird interactions with fishing vessels, demonstrating a range of practical mitigation measures available to reduce seabird bycatch and  conducting workshops on these issues.

The Lapalala Wilderness School (LWS), situated in the Waterberg area of the Limpopo Province, is seeking a driven outreach coordinator to support the LWS’s environmental education programmes in local community schools. Applicants must have a passion for the natural environment and educating youth and be prepared to commence duties in March 2008. The main responsibilities will be to develop, initiate and support sustainable community based school projects.  The ideal candidate must be prepared to live and work in a relatively remote area, and be fluent in siPedi.
