Phil Hockey awarded 2008 Stevenson Hamilton Award by the ZSSA

The FitzPatrick Institute's Director, Professor Phil Hockey, has been awarded the Zoological Society of South Africa's Stevenson Hamilton Award  for 2008. The award was made in recognition of his substantial contribution to promoting zoology, particularly among the public in South Africa.

To Quote Phil: "given that a substantial proportion of my research has been funded by public money, I have always felt a strong commitment to ensuring that results which would be of public interest are indeed communicated to the public in appropriate media, such as magazines and books".

Among the publications that he has authored or co-authored are Waders of Southern Africa, Birds of Southern Africa (Struik), Sasol Birds of Southern Africa, Beautiful Birds of Southern Africa, Birds in Action and The African Penguin: a Natural History. He was also Editor-in-Chief for the latest edition of Roberts - Birds of Southern Africa. With over 100 scientific publications and almost the same number of semi-popular publications has demonstrated that he is ideed a man of his word!
