Uganda: UWA, Lira Peasant Clash Over Python
Kampala — Drama ensued between officials from the Uganda Wild Life Authority (UWA) and a peasant in Lira district over a python on Friday. Martin Odongo, 27, from Adeknino village in Amach sub-county on Wednesday captured the reptile measuring about four metres long coiled around his goat.

Odongo said he put it in a sack and went to the UWA demanding they compensate him for his goat before he could set the reptile free. But Louis Onzima, a senior warden who led a team from the Murchison Falls Conservation Area, said Odongo could not get payment for his goat since there was no law that guaranteed compensation for damage caused by wild animals in Uganda.

"Have you ever seen anybody being compensated because of a snake bite?" Ozima asked, attracting fury from Odongo, who warned that he would kill the reptile and skin it if he was not compensated.

Odongo said he was shocked that the officials gave him only sh20,000 as a token of \appreciation, adding that he had three goats which he was rearing to get school fees for his children.

Odongo eventually handed over the reptile to the UWA officials.
