Plans to erect a 397-kilometre electric fence around the Mount Kenya, one of the five water towers, are underway. Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said it would commence the work once the scheme is approved by National Environmental Management Authority (Nema). In a notice released to the press on Monday, KWS urged members of the public to submit comments on a planned Environmental Impact Assessment Report for the project. The wildlife service forwarded its proposal to NEMA seeking approval for the fence project, which will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will cover 50 kilometres with 20 kilometre fence erected from Sirimon Gorge to Wangu Embori and the other 30-kilometre long fence going from Gikumbo to Chehe areas. KWS said that other associated works for the project would entail rehabilitation of roads and electricity extension. A post for rangers will also be established as well as a research centre at King'ong'o in Nyeri. The notice also said that communities living around the forest will be provided with access gates. The residents will be required to notify KWS or Kenya Forestry Service officials when they go into the conservancy to be protected against animal attacks. Migratory routes for wild animals will be secured and efforts are being made to make a corridor linking Mount Kenya and Ngare Ndare forest in a project funded by Billy Woodley Mt Kenya Trust. http://www.nation.co.ke |
