Gorongosa National Park, Sofala Province, Mozambique Please note that we are looking for people of *Mozambican citizenship*. The US-based non-profit Carr Foundation has teamed with the Government of Mozambique to protect and restore the nation’s 4000 square kilometer flagship protected area. Gorongosa National Park once held the highest concentration of large animals in all of Africa and was considered by many to be Africa’s most popular park. In the next 30 years, Gorongosa National Park will be shaped by the implementation of this restoration project, which has the twin objectives of protecting and restoring its biodiversity and increasing the quality of life of the tens of thousand of people that live in its buffer zone. The Park is currently embarking on the development of its management plan. Through this process we will design a 5 year roadmap which constitutes the first steps towards achieving the park’s 30 year vision of success. The Protected Area Planning Specialist is a member of the Park’s Scientific Services team and reports to the Manager of the Conservation Planning and Sustainable Development Program. The position is based at Gorongosa National Park, Sofala Province, Mozambique. General Responsibilities The Protected Area Planning Specialist performs conservation and science-based work, including plans organized around conservation targets, threats, and ecological management strategies for Gorongosa National Park. He/She provides technical support and quality information to the Conservation Action Planning process to facilitate the design of the park’s management plan. Technical support includes compiling, analyzing, and managing a variety of biotic, abiotic, and socio-economic data sets including information on the status and distribution of ecological communities and imperiled plant and animal species. He/She is also responsible for organizing participatory workshops with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. Finally, he/she is responsible for contributing materials to monthly newsletter, assist with conservation training modules on related matters, and provide overall administrative and travel support to the Department of Scientific Services. Qualifications and Requirements • Graduate degree or Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field and two years related work experience or comparable combination of education and experience. • Demonstrated experience working in teams of multiple nationalities in a culturally mixed environment • Familiarity with GIS, including ability to utilize data to create appropriate maps • Familiarity with the Conservation Action Planning methodology • Ability to compile data from many sources into concise documents, resolving differences between disparate sets of data or types of information, modifying plans and processes as needed. • Ability to organize and facilitate participatory community workshops • Demonstrated experience in MS Office, Word, Excel, and Access. • Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, including scientists, scouts, community members and others, providing and obtaining needed information. Ability to communicate technical material to non-scientific audiences • Demonstrated excellence in oral and technical written communication both in English and Portuguese • Experience working in Mozambique and/or Gorongosa District preferred • Mozambican nationals and women preferred • Ability to work in hot and humid weather conditions, remote location and often in physically demanding circumstances. Valid driver’s license and safe driving record. • Work requires occasional physical exertion and/or muscular strain. Work may involve several disagreeable elements and/or exposure to job hazard’s where there is some possibility of injury. Salary will be commensurate with experience. - Limbe Wildlife Centre in SW Cameroon takes care of infant primates that are lucky enough to be rescued from the illegal pet trade. In November 2007, ACF, ERuDeF and Daniel Taylor organised an art workshop with 13 Cameroonian artists in the centre in order to raise awareness and funding for great apes conservation.
