SA: Marine Ecologist

The main purpose of this position, reporting to the Manager: Scientific Services,
will be to undertake ecological research, and monitor the marine and estuarine
environment of several national parks. An important component of the work entails
the investigation of resource utilisation in National Parks with estuarine and marine
areas.

The successful applicant should hold at least an MSc degree (preferably a PhD),
coupled with relevant experience, plus demonstrated ability to publish in scientific
journals. A Class 4 Commercial Diver Qualification is essential, as is good working
knowledge of MS Office and relevant statistical packages. Further requirements
include sound communicative skills and the ability to communicate research
findings to those without a scientific background, as well as willingness and
availability to travel and work alone in the various Parks, and also in a team, when
required.

Your duties will involve the following activities:
• conducting applied marine
research to address ecological problems, especially resource use
• conducting
surveys and community analyses of marine resources
• establishing and
maintaining surveillance and monitoring programmes in marine protected areas
• publishing research findings in scientific journals and popular media • providing
advice for the management of marine areas of National Parks and contributing
to adaptive management thereof
• providing advice to senior management on
issues within the sphere of expertise
• participating in scoping and EIAs related
to developments, both within National Parks with estuarine and marine areas and
areas bordering the Parks
• liaising with non-SANParks scientists about research
in marine areas of National Parks and seeking greater involvement in collaborative
projects
• representing SANParks at meetings, committees and workshops,
particularly related to Marine Protected Area issues.

A SAMSA small craft skipper’s licence (Category D), as well as working knowledge
of Geographical Positional Systems (GPS) and Geographical Information Systems
(ArcView), would be strong recommendations.

The all-inclusive cost-to-company remuneration package falls within the range
of R188 840 – R271 315 per annum, including the concomitant allowances and
benefits associated with a position of this nature within SANParks.
