SA: Research Technician

The Department of Botany at the University of Cape Town, together with the
South African National Biodiversity Institute and the University of
California, Berkeley are currently involved in a collaborative research project
examining the response of the unique fynbos flora to climate change.
We have an opportunity for a highly motivated individual to work as a
research technician.

 

This full-time position will involve both field and laboratory
work and will focus on making plant ecophysiological measurements (e.g. leaflevel
gas-exchange) as well as conducting other laboratory analyses. The position
will be based in the Botany Department, University of Cape Town.
The successful applicant will have the following skills:

- Hons or MSc degree in environmental sciences (background in plant
ecophysiology a strong advantage).
- Technical skills: Familiarity with plant ecophysiological equipment (e.g.
infra-red gas analysers, pressure chambers).
- Laboratory skills: Excellent attention to detail and an aptitude for technical
laboratory procedures. Experience with stable isotope methods a plus.
- Computer skills: Experience with Microsoft Excel and the capacity to learn
new software.
- Capable of rapidly learning new skills and working on own initiative.
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to supervise others.
- Ability to work long hours and conduct physically demanding fieldwork in
less than optimal conditions.
- Valid drivers licence.
- Excellent skills in spoken and written English.

The position is available from 7th Jan 2008. The initial appointment is for 6
months, renewable for an additional 6 months based on satisfactory performance
and availability of funds. Salary is commensurate with experience and will be
competitive. Review of applicants will begin on the 15th December 2007 and
continue until the position is filled.
