Uganda: Encroachers Worry Minister

Kampala - STATE minister for gender Rukia Nakadama is concerned about the rising number of encroachers on the South Busoga forest reserve.

The minister said residents had reported that some people suspected to be Kenyans, were conducting illegal cross-country timber business on Lake Victoria.

Nakadama, who was addressing squatters of Nakalyango village located in part of the reserve in Malongo sub-county, Mayuge district on Friday, urged the district leaders and residents to work together to stop the dangerous practice.

She was flanked by the Resident District Commissioner, John Kasenge, area Police chief Winfred Butazi, and the head of Bufulubi Prisons, Frank Baine.

Nakadama, who is also the district Woman MP, refuted reports that there was a court case between the Government and some people who claim to own the forest.

She urged residents to stop selling forest land.
