Partnership Coordinator for the South African Climate Action Partnership (CAP)
General Purpose:
Coordinate all CAP activities to achieve the program’s four objectives, as stated below:
1. To raise awareness around climate change and the links between climate change and the
conservation of biodiversity.
2. To promote the integrity of climate change projects by promoting the adoption of globally accepted
carbon trading standards, with specific emphasis on the Climate, Community and Biodiversity
Standard (CCBS).
3. To advise on and support southern African solutions for mitigation and adaptation to climate
change, with a biodiversity conservation outcome.
4. To promote cross-sectoral policy that supports climate change mitigation and adaptation activities.
Skills required:
a) A graduate degree and/or suitable experience in a related and relevant field;
b) Strong interest in climate change and environmental issues and the will to expand knowledge;
c) Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills;
d) Excellent writing skills in at least English; The ability to converse fluently in any other South
African language is a strong advantage;
e) Networking ability within the NGO sector as well as with the media, private sector and government
officials;
f) Ability to work independently as well as within a team;
g) Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office and Internet/email;
h) Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and juggle a variety of tasks.
Main Tasks and Duties:
1. CAP strategic plan:
a. Implement and support the ongoing updating (if required) of the CAP strategic plan;
b. Coordinate the development, promotion and regular review and update of the CAP
website;
c. Develop and implement a media campaign aimed at raising public awareness about
climate change;
d. Develop and implement a campaign aimed at promoting awareness about the CCBS;
e. Coordinate an inaugural CAP Conference, aimed at promoting increased awareness
about Climate Change, the CCBS and aligned Southern African initiatives;
f. Become familiar with the relevant government Climate Change structures and policy;
g. Work with the CAP advisors and partners to identify and promote suitable, audited carbon
offset projects that adhere to the CCB Standards;
h. Attend relevant climate change meetings;
i. Coordinate the annual CAP meeting and any special meetings required;
j. Prepare an annual review of CAP.
2. Partner Support:
a. Coordinate a carbon audit for the head offices of the partner NGOs, suggest carbon
reduction steps and once a carbon offset package is established ensure that the NGOs
head offices are carbon neutral;
b. Support the CAP partners to develop their own Climate Change projects, if required, to
ensure coordination and effectiveness;
c. Assist the CAP members to develop a strategy for engaging government and the private
sector on Climate Change issues;
3. Fundraising and Administration:
a. Develop and implement a fundraising strategy aimed at raising the funds required to
support the effective role out of the CAP strategic plan and underwrite the medium term
costs of the CAP coordinator function;
b. Administer the CAP budget adhering to strict financial controls;
c. Ensure timely delivery on financial reports and all other necessary reports and documents
as required.
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
The selected candidate will be based in Cape Town and will on occasion need to travel outside of Cape
Town and work outside of normal office hours.
