South Africa: Seabird Officer, Albatros Task Force
BirdLife South Africa (BLSA) is one of the largest, most active non-governmental conservation organisations in South Africa. An enthusiastic, responsible person with a keen interest in marine ornithology is required to join the Albatross Task Force team based in Cape Town. Duties will include recording seabird interactions with fishing vessels, demonstrating a range of practical mitigation measures available to reduce seabird bycatch and  conducting workshops on these issues.

Applicants must hold a Matric with majors in Biology and Mathematics and a keen interest in marine conservation issues. The successful applicant must be comfortable spending extended periods at-sea. Experience working with the fishing industry would be an advantage as would knowledge and interest of seabird biology and ecology. The preferred candidate must have knowledge of and experience using Microsoft Office software and electronic communications,  as well as organisational and strong interpersonal skills. Fluency in written and spoken English is required.  Fluency in Afrikaans will be an advantage.  The possession of a valid Code B motor vehicle driving licence is required. Experience onboard fishing vessels will be an advantage.

Duties will entail:
* conducting extended trip at-sea to work with fishermen to adopt mitigation measures to reduce seabird bycatch
* liaising with the fishing industry and  Marine and Coastal Management Inspectorate and other organisations to coordinate workshops at all major South African ports
* maintaining an electronic (Access) data base
* making travel arrangements and organising trips to sea
* preparing monthly reports
* locating relevant literature

BirdLife South Africa offers a salary of R 7000 per month plus R140/day at-sea allowance.

The initial contract is for a three month period with the possibility of a one year renewal.

The position is based at the BLSA offices in Cape Town and the successful applicant
must be prepared to spend a significant amount of  time at sea.

  • Limbe Wildlife Centre in SW Cameroon takes care of infant primates that are lucky enough to be rescued from the illegal pet trade.
