South Africa: Post-doctoral position in longterm ecological research, Kruger NP
|
The Ndlovu Node of the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON)
gathers and analyses data on environmental change in the savanna biome of South Africa.
Together with WITS University and the Kruger National Park, the SAEON Ndlovu Node is
recruiting a post-doctoral scientist to analyze long-term data for protected areas and rural
areas in the lowveld region. The incumbent will register with the School of Animal, Plant
and Environmental Sciences (WITS) and work from the Node offices in the Kruger
National Park, Phalaborwa.
Research will involve acquiring and analyzing existing data on
a suitable topic that falls within one of the following broader topics:
· Effect of land-use change on river hydrology
· Sustainability of wood harvesting in rural areas
· Comparison of effects of rural versus conservation land-use on ecosystem
functioning and/or biodiversity
Field sampling may be required to complement existing long-term data. The position also
involves assistance with other activities of the SAEON Ndlovu Node, such as working with
local schools, database management, and providing input on other long-term research
projects.
Requirements:
· A PhD in an ecological or environmental science field
· Proven ability to conduct scientific research and write-up scientific results
independently
· Good communication skills, and an ability to present research results to a broad
audience
· Experience with any one of the following will be an advantage:
o Statistical analysis of time series data
o Database design and management
o Analysis of remote sensing imagery
Duration: 2 years
Salary: R180 000
