Uganda: Busoga Begins Tree Project

Kampala - BUSOGA Kingdom is establishing a tree nursery and green house. The kingdom finance minister, Patrick Kirya, said the project would be based at the kingdom headquarters in Bugembe, Jinja district.

He said new technologies like grafting seeds would be used to improve agricultural products. "By establishing a nursery and green house, we shall have trees that can be intercropped like avocadoes, musizi and mugasiya (acacia).

"We are also promoting other trees which can be grown in coffee and banana plantations." Kirya explained that the seedlings would be distributed among the Busoga mainly through clans.

He said the project would improve people's incomes through the sale of trees, use of firewood and cater for their nutritional needs as well.

"The acacia trees are good for fuel, while avocadoes can serve as vegetables."
