South Africa: Conservation Manager, De Mond Nature Reserve
De Mond Nature Reserve is situated 26 km south-east of Bredasdorp on the south-western Cape coast. The reserve lies at the mouth of the Heuningnes River, between the coastal villages of Arniston (Waenhuiskrans) and Struisbaai. De Mond is 954 ha in size, and comprises former sections of the farms Zoetendals Vallei and Bushy Park. It was proclaimed a nature reserve in 1986.
Core responsibilities:
•    Execute overall management of the De Mond Nature Reserve
•    The compilation and execution of reserve management plans, business plan/s and ICDP’s (Integrated Conservation Development Plans).
•    Ensure the provision of an ecological service (in line with the Back to Basics Plan).
•    Effective staff management including support, training and motivation.
•    Manage the implementation of programs such as effective invasive alien plant control and fire management on the reserve.
•    Arrange for the effective maintenance of the reserve infrastructure.
•    Conserve cultural, historical and archeological sites on the reserve.
•    Support research as well as experiential training.
•    Ensure environmental law compliance by users of the reserve.
•    Expenditure control and asset management.
•    Management of tourism infrastructure and activities including Public Private Partnerships.
•    Facilitate stewardship agreements with private landowners adjacent to the reserves and landowners within possible ecological corridors joining the reserve with other conservation worthy areas.
•    Manage the future abovementioned stewardship agreements


Requirements:
•    A formal qualification in Nature Conservation
•    Two years practical experience
•    Knowledge and experience of youth training practices, assessments and coaching
•    A valid 08 drivers license, ability to drive on 4x4 terrain
•    Sound interpersonal, communicative and people management skills
•    Computer literacy
•    Physical fitness to perform inspections/investigations in mountainous terrain

  • Limbe Wildlife Centre in SW Cameroon takes care of infant primates that are lucky enough to be rescued from the illegal pet trade. In November 2007, ACF, ERuDeF and Daniel Taylor organised an art workshop with 13 Cameroonian artists in the centre in order to raise awareness and funding for great apes conservation.
