South Africa: Eco-Schools Node Co-ordinator

The Kirstenbosch 'Fynbos' Eco-Schools node has been based at the Gold Fields Environmental Education Centre, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden since 2006. he Eco-Schools programme is an internationally recognised award scheme that accredits schools that make a commitment to continuously improving their school’s environment. It aims to support schools with better environmental learning and improved environmental management. In South Africa, the Eco-Schools programme is a national programme developed as a partnership between the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) and the Department of Education and is open to all schools in South Africa.


This position requires a dynamic person who is in possession of a Grade 12 certificate, a tertiary qualification in education or environmental education would be an advantage. The successful candidate must have a minimum of two years experience in education or in environmental education which should include the knowledge and ability to integrate the National Curriculum Statement into environmental education programmes. Candidates will require strong organisational, managerial and administrative skills as well as written and oral communication skills. A valid Code B driver's licence and having your own vehicle would be a further advantage.

While schools can register and work towards being an Eco-School on their own, it has been found that support at a local level is very helpful. Responsibilities would include supporting the educators of five schools over a period of a year with : 􀁸 the development of environmental working groups - conducting environmental audits - the development of a school environmental policy - the development of activities and lesson plans - Further responsibilities include:- networking with other Eco-Schools nodes in the Cape Town area 􀁸 the development and submission of Eco-Schools portfolios - writing at least one article for the local press and/or the EEASA Bulletin - organising flag hand-over ceremonies for successful schools. The node co-ordinator is expected to work with each of the five schools for 8 hours per month.

SANBI offers an annual salary of R47 916 and a travel and subsistence allowance of R6 655. Each school has also been allocated a budget for registration, resource materials and workshop expenses.(one year contract)
