South Africa: Environmental Intern, WESSA Western Cape
Owing to the generous support of the Cape Action Plan for People and the Environment (C.A.P.E.), Table Mountain Fund (TMF), WWF-SA and the South African National Botanical Institute (SANBI), the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa: Western Cape region (WESSA WC) is able to offer suitable candidates* the opportunity to be an intern at our offices in Kirstenhof for a year.
This internship will involve the introduction of the successful candidate to a number of capacity developing areas of work including:
•    Setting up and running of both formal and informal capacity building interventions with a variety of groups, but primarily those from disadvantaged areas
•    Assisting with environmental training related to marine and wetland ecosystems, waste minimization, water demand management, indigenous and alien vegetation etc
•    Networking with other groups in the province regarding conservation-related training and project implementation
•    Developing presentations and training materials related to the above

The purposes of the internship are to:
•    enable him or her to access and use environmental knowledge, information and understanding effectively in confronting issues that pose threats to ecosystem integrity and sustainability
•    prepare him or her for a rewarding and fulfilling place in the world of work where a passion for the environment and changing human attitudes for the better through formal and informal training interventions, combines with the need to earn a living using developed skills.

Specific skills that could be developed or improved would include:
•    accessing, collating and presenting information relevant to environmental capacity building
•    using a variety of printed, electronic and other media effectively
•    developing materials for short courses
•    an understanding of the national qualifications framework (NQF) and the place of environmental training in it
•    polishing of use of computers, intranets, internet, email, spreadsheets, graphics packages etc
•    improving writing and speaking skills for different contexts

applicants need to:
•    have successfully completed matric or the equivalent
•    be comfortable in the medium of English
•    have an interest in the environment
•    be keen to help with environmental awareness-raising
•    be computer literate
•    fall into the HDI category
•    be between 18 and 30 years of age

The successful candidate will receive a monthly stipend and be expected to sign a contract with the project partners.

  • Limbe Wildlife Centre in SW Cameroon takes care of infant primates that are lucky enough to be rescued from the illegal pet trade. In November 2007, ACF, ERuDeF and Daniel Taylor organised an art workshop with 13 Cameroonian artists in the centre in order to raise awareness and funding for great apes conservation.
