Owing to the generous support of the Cape Action Plan for People and the Environment (C.A.P.E.), Table Mountain Fund (TMF), WWF-SA and the South African National Botanical Institute (SANBI), the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa: Western Cape region (WESSA WC) is able to offer suitable candidates* the opportunity to be an intern at our offices in Kirstenhof for a year.
This internship will involve the introduction of the successful candidate to a number of capacity developing areas of work including: • Setting up and running of both formal and informal capacity building interventions with a variety of groups, but primarily those from disadvantaged areas • Assisting with environmental training related to marine and wetland ecosystems, waste minimization, water demand management, indigenous and alien vegetation etc • Networking with other groups in the province regarding conservation-related training and project implementation • Developing presentations and training materials related to the above The purposes of the internship are to: • enable him or her to access and use environmental knowledge, information and understanding effectively in confronting issues that pose threats to ecosystem integrity and sustainability • prepare him or her for a rewarding and fulfilling place in the world of work where a passion for the environment and changing human attitudes for the better through formal and informal training interventions, combines with the need to earn a living using developed skills. Specific skills that could be developed or improved would include: • accessing, collating and presenting information relevant to environmental capacity building • using a variety of printed, electronic and other media effectively • developing materials for short courses • an understanding of the national qualifications framework (NQF) and the place of environmental training in it • polishing of use of computers, intranets, internet, email, spreadsheets, graphics packages etc • improving writing and speaking skills for different contexts applicants need to: • have successfully completed matric or the equivalent • be comfortable in the medium of English • have an interest in the environment • be keen to help with environmental awareness-raising • be computer literate • fall into the HDI category • be between 18 and 30 years of age The successful candidate will receive a monthly stipend and be expected to sign a contract with the project partners.
