South Africa: Manager: Bioregional Programmmmes, SANBI
South Africa boasts an exceptionally rich biodiversity. The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), a public entity operating in nine different centres, is the only institution in the world mandated with the study, conservation and promotion of an entire country’s fauna, flora and their ecosystems. This opportunity is on offer to a suitably qualified and experienced person in the Eastern Cape as part of the development and implementation of bioregional programmes in South Africa.

An exciting career opportunity exists to lead the operation of SANBI’s Bioregional Programmes Co-ordination Unit, working with the Eastern Cape government, non-governmental organisations
(NGOs) and other partners.

We are looking for a self-driven and dynamic leader with excellent communication skills (proficiency in both English and isiXhosa is preferred). Applicants must be fully computer-literate, must have a valid driver’s licence and be prepared to travel.

A postgraduate degree in natural, social or management sciences is required and preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate knowledge of key biodiversity concepts and issues in biodiversity management in the Eastern Cape, an understanding of the social and economic development context, as well as the relationship
between biodiversity management, development and poverty alleviation.

The suitable candidate will have 5 – 10 years’ experience and proven ability in programme implementation, preferably in the conservation and development sector in South Africa. Proven project management, facilitation, strategic planning, as well as monitoring and evaluation skills are required, as is the ability to work with a variety of community stakeholders, NGOs and governmental organisations at all levels.

Key responsibilities entail: • providing strategic leadership to the implementation
of bioregional programmes in the Eastern Cape • managing an effective Bioregional Programmes Co-ordination Unit (providing strategic leadership, mentorship and effective administration) • managing
donor relations, including ensuring compliance with donor requirements
• ensuring that the Eastern Cape Implementation Committee is functioning effectively, and that the partnership is expanded and strengthened • providing strategic and technical advice to organs of state and other stakeholders in respect of biodiversity management and policy • establishing and maintaining effective information flow and active communication and learning networks • participating in relevant Steering Committees, task teams and other governance or advisory committees.

SANBI offers an all-inclusive salary of R 369 000 per annum.

  • Limbe Wildlife Centre in SW Cameroon takes care of infant primates that are lucky enough to be rescued from the illegal pet trade. In November 2007, ACF, ERuDeF and Daniel Taylor organised an art workshop with 13 Cameroonian artists in the centre in order to raise awareness and funding for great apes conservation.
