Internship opportunity to assist the Wildlife and Environment society (WESSA Western Cape). Environmentalist based in George or Cape Town in developing capacity for advocacy and support for public participation in environmental processes and other land management activities in the Western Cape
In terms of the various land management / conversion applications (e.g. NEMA EIAs, LUPO applications, amendment to structure plans, appeals etc): the intern would be required to: • Review local and provincial papers for advertisements calling for public participation. • Inform independent consultants that WESSA is registering as an interested and affected party. • Secure access to the relevant documentation: Visit libraries, Municipal offices, download or collect documents from consultants. • Attend site visits. During the EIA phase, the purpose of the site visit would be to assess the suitability of the area for the proposed development. During the construction or operation phases, the purpose of site visits would be to determine compliance with the relevant authorisation(s). • Draft comments / objections specific to each case: As part of written comments obo WESSA Western Cape, the intern would need to research the particular area of concern (eg fresh water availability, or archaeological resources) and substantiate objections/comments. • Compile and maintain a database of land management applications occurring in the area; • Draft appeals against inappropriate decisions taken by Municipal or Provincial authorities; • Attend environmental liaison committee (ELC) meetings. • Review and assimilate all relevant Provincial and National policies, legislation, guidelines/reports.
