The Scientific Services Unit of the Western Cape Nature Conservation Board is offering an exciting post to be part of a dynamic team. Based in Jonkershoek, Stellenbosch, with the Western Boland and West Coast as primary work sphere, the post comprises the following:
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES • Manage the effective flow of biodiversity data and information to and from protected areas • Co-ordinate regional biodiversity inventory and monitoring actions • Co-ordinate the compilation and revision of protected area management plans • Co-ordinate ecological auditing programmes • Provide scientific input into regional conservation land-use planning and management projects and programmes • Identify research needs • Provide input into policy formulation and review REQUIREMENTS • An MSc or MTech degree in the Natural Sciences • Thorough understanding of ecological theory, ecological processes and components of biodiversity • Thorough understanding of the principles of protected area management, conservation biology and Integrated Environmental Management • Sound understanding of principles of experimental design and statistics • Ability to motivate and mentor staff to ensure maximum productivity and optimal development skills • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interface with a wide range of people (staff, scientists and the public), including the ability to chair meetings, run workshops, deliver scientific and popular presentations, and write scientific and popular papers • Strategic thinker with the ability to prioritise and adapt according to circumstances • Ability to work effectively as leader and part of multi-disciplinary teams • Physically fit and willing and able to undertake fieldwork • Prepared to travel extensively and be away from home for periods of time • Must have a valid Code 08 driver’s licence RECOMMENDATIONS • Ecological field experience • Experience, knowledge and a broad interest in conservation biology, as well as the Cape Floral Region and Succulent Karoo ecosystem pattern and processes • A good working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (ArcView) • Ability to interpret conservation policies and legislation • A confident, committed, service-orientated, organised, and innovative predisposition ENQUIRIES: Dr Ernst Baard. - Limbe Wildlife Centre in SW Cameroon takes care of infant primates that are lucky enough to be rescued from the illegal pet trade. In November 2007, ACF, ERuDeF and Daniel Taylor organised an art workshop with 13 Cameroonian artists in the centre in order to raise awareness and funding for great apes conservation.
