Angola: MoU for Biodiversity Preservation Zones Signed

Luanda - A memorandum of understanding for the protection and management of biodiversity preservation zones was signed amongst the Ministry of Urbanisation and Environment (MINUA), the Institute of Social Reinsertion of Ex-Soldiers (IRSEM) and the German International Cooperation Enterprise (GTZ).

The accord, which foresees the social reintegration of former soldiers, includes the creation of training schools to upgrade supervisors and managers of game reserves.

Some 40 supervisors and six managers of national parks will benefit from the training programme in the first phase. The beneficiaries will subsequently be employed in the national parks of Quissama and Cangandala, and in other game reserves, to reinforce and improve the management and supervision of biodiversity preservation areas.

MINUA`s national director for natural resources, Soki Kwedikuenda, and IRSEM`s director general, general António Andrade, and Markhus Behrend of GTZ signed the memorandum of understanding.

At the signing ceremony, the Angolan minister of Urbanisation and Environment, Sita José highlighted the important role that ex-soldiers can play in preserving the biodiversity.
