South Africa: Dolphin population ecology M.Sc. project, SANCOR

There is an  IMMEDIATE  OPENING  for an M.Sc. project at the Department of Zoology and Entomology, University of Pretoria, based at the Whale nit in Cape Town. The project represents part of a larger programme assessing population structure of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa plumbea) along the southeast coast of South Africa and southern Mozambique.

The project is primarily lab-based, involving analyses of photo-identification data collected over the past several years, and will focus on estimating population parameters and size, assessing population connectivity, and modelling residency rates using mark-recapture analyses of individual photo-identification data.  This is an excellent opportunity to learn mark-recapture techniques applied in studies of cetaceans.  Apart from the lab-based component, the student will have an opportunity to participate in other ongoing field projects, including boat-based surveys, and gain first-hand experience in field data collection.

Basic requirements:

-  Ability to work long hours and be detail-oriented

-  Reasonable analytical skills, and/or willingness to learn
independently using available professional literature

Eligibility:

The candidate needs to be a South African citizen, eligible for an NRF
bursary (a 2-year M.Sc. bursary of R30000/year has been secured).
Additional support (although limited) might be possible (subject to
availability of further funds).
