Seychelles: Science Coordinator, Nature Seychelles
The Science Coordinator occupies a senior position within Nature Seychelles. S/he is required to provide overall scientific and technical support to Nature Seychelles through a diverse and multi-tasking work programme.  This includes essential tasks ranging from strategic and scientific advice, coordinating field staff, implementing conservation projects ongoing terrestrial bird, seabird and, other wildlife monitoring, habitat restoration projects and other knowledge based programmes of the organization.  It must be noted that Nature Seychelles is operating in a changing environment and the Main Duties described below are liable to change over time as new opportunities and directions emerge.
MAIN DUTIES:
  • To strengthen the capacity of Nature Seychelles and hence improve its sustainability.
  • Ensure that monitoring systems are properly standardized, e.g. in manuals, and used.
  • Ensure that staff and other partner training on science and other technical aspects is delivered as required, and maintained.
  • Attend relevant meetings both nationally and overseas as directed.
  • To deliver a coherent programme of applied conservation science.
  • Manage the organizations’ scientific/conservation projects and relevant aspects of other projects and liaise closely with Project Co-coordinator.
  • Promote and coordinate students (MSc and PhD) to deliver the agreed science/conservation projects of the organization.
  • Provide technical and scientific support and coordination to the Cousin Conservation Officer and Cousin’s conservation programme in collaboration with Cousin management.
  • To expand a programme of conservation action.
  • Input into ongoing programmes by leading SMART and the Seychelles Seabird Group.
  • Develop work based on needs of IBAs, EBAs and Species Action Plans.
  • Develop project proposals, fundraise in collaboration with the Projects Co-ordinator and implement.
  • Manage and provide technical input to project based research and field staff as requested.
  • Continue to broaden focus from bird to overall conservation-based organization,
  • Continue to establish a sound information base and associated management systems.
  • Maintain input to existing databases as well as assist in developing new ones.
  • Update scientific library with relevant literature and scientific articles
  • To input to the Environmental Education work programme
  • Continue seabird newsletter and other reports.
  • Upon request, provide technical input to popular publications and awareness activities especially publications such as Zwazo, Annual Reports, Web Site, and PR materials
  • To provide effective information, based on sound science, for environmental advocacy
  • Write technical reports and scientific articles
  • Prepare and produce papers.
  • Deliver presentations at scientific meetings as requested

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
· A work program is needed to encompass the above. Whilst this may exist from previous years, a new incumbent needs to produce a new two year program and agree it with the CE.
· A science plan needs to be produced or updated as the case may be to define and describe various projects and activities that can be delivered by the organization
· The incumbent will work under the direct management of the Chief Executive. Whilst working as independently as possible, he/she is expected to have any and all new proposals, recommendations, interventions, activities and work discussed and cleared by the CE owing to the sensitive nature of the job dealing as such with endangered biodiversity, protected areas and private islands, volunteers and students from different countries, local people, and multiple partners including government and overseas organizations..

OTHER DUTIES:
There are many reactive and unplanned functions of a small and energetic organization such as assisting any other staff with their outputs.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Be physically fit. Have a good mix of office and field based skills. Be highly diplomatic and possess a culturally sensitive disposition and willing to work within the parameters of a small island developing state. Willingness to work within a small team.  Possess the ability to adapt to change and learn new skills when these are required.   Adept at program planning and ability to use participatory planning processes and have a target-driven approach.  Ability to manage computer databases.  Ability to use different types of software.  Possess a broad knowledge of conservation biology, natural history and taxonomy and field based skills for monitoring and research.

SALARY
USD 2,000/month (tax free in Seychelles) + 1 international return ticket.
Work related transport, office, and required materials and equipment supplied.
 
LOCATION OF JOB:
Nature Seychelles, Mahé Office, Seychelles and fieldwork on other islands as necessary
