Uganda: Chimps Try to Escape
Kampala - PANIC hit the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre after chimpanzees, led by Zakayo, the alpha male, escaped from their enclosure on Budongo Island yesterday.

For two hours, care takers and game guards attempted to persuade the chimps to return to their sanctuary in vain.

Zakayo, who had become agitated, turned a deaf ear to pleas and moved with haste towards a group of Indian visitors.

Sources said Zakayo was sedated by a veterinary doctor and by press time, he had not recovered.

Zakayo was kept in one of the enclosures at Budongo Island.

After this, it was easy to entice the other chimps - Amina, Ruth and Aluma - back into the enclosure, sources added.

Andrew Seguya, the executive director of the centre, said the chimps passed through a weak point of the enclosure.
