South Africa: Acting Reserve Manager, KRCA
Seeking a Nature Conservator to manage Kenilworth Racecourse Conservation Area and assist in the management of Meadowridge Common, Rondebosch Common and Raapenberg Bird Sanctuary as from 1 May – 30 November 2008.

The applicant must be a self-motivated and organised individual with the ability to take initiative and respond to varying demands.

Salary: R 5000 p/m


Minimum Requirements:
•    Degree or post graduate qualification in Nature Conservation or Environmental Management
•    Computer Literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
•    Valid code 08 drivers licence
•    Good physical fitness
•    Willingness to work overtime when needed
•    Experience in Nature Conservation or related field


Core Responsibilities:
A nature conservationist has three main objections.

1. Biodiversity Management
2. Environmental Education
3. Tourism

As Acting Reserve Manager you are primarily responsible for the biodiversity management of the conservation precinct (Precinct 4) designated at Kenilworth Racecourse.  This will entail implementation of a biodiversity management plan and the management of the components listed above as according to the existing annual plan of operation and monthly work schedules.

Your job as a Nature Conservationist may entail in detail amongst others:

•    the maintenance and construction of infrastructure such as buildings, fences, public facilities, paths, roads, bridges etc.
•    the maintenance of equipment, small plant and vehicles on the reserve
•    the monitoring of biodiversity through surveys of various animals & plant species
•    the compilation of monthly reports
•    propagating and restoring endangered plant species
•    responding to environmental disasters such as oil spills, flooding or uncontrolled wild fires
•    the control and eradication of alien invasive species
•    conducting controlled burns of old vegetation
•    liasing with the public, visitors and interest groups
•    assisting with environmental education facilities & programmes
•    promote environmental awareness
•    assisting the racecourse management with information and presentations to interest groups
•    response to wildlife related complaints within the site boundaries
•    assistance in the removal of feral animals within the site boundaries
•    the issuing of information and answering of queries to visitors
•    the inspection of premises, construction sites and film shoots relating to the Kenilworth Racecourse Conservation Area
•    the implementation of controlled fires and fire breaks
•    assistance in the collection of information for the monitoring of fauna & flora
•    the implementation of health and safety regulations in field operations
•    the introductory training of volunteers who provide services on nature reserves
•    the mentoring of a nature conservation student completing their third experiential practical year
•    the co-ordination of volunteers and interest groups at Kenilworth
•    the supervision of staff and external contract staff involved in veld management or impacting on the conservation precinct

  • Limbe Wildlife Centre in SW Cameroon takes care of infant primates that are lucky enough to be rescued from the illegal pet trade. In November 2007, ACF, ERuDeF and Daniel Taylor organised an art workshop with 13 Cameroonian artists in the centre in order to raise awareness and funding for great apes conservation.
