Fixed-term contract to provide assistance with the implementation of a research programme under the Flower Valley Conservation Trust in the Stanford/Gansbaai area, as well as the development & piloting of sustainable harvesting certification

Background

The Contract Employee is a locally recruited person who will be responsible for carrying out the Terms of Reference (TOR) as described below, which fall under the Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative (ABI) “Sustainable Harvesting” Component, under the activities described as “Development of a Certification Scheme” (No. 3) & “Monitoring of Sustainable Harvesting” (No.7).  The Contract Employee will report to the Flower Valley Conservation Trust (FVCT): Conservation Coordinator.

Key objectives of the post
To implement aspects of the long-term monitoring and biological research programme on the impacts of harvesting on different species guilds under Flower Valley Conservation Trust and to assist with the development and piloting of the sustainable harvesting certification scheme.

Duties & Responsibilities
1.    Implement and coordinate of research activities under Flower Valley Conservation Trust as described by Output2 of the Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative
2.    Maintain and collect of data from research sites
3.    Maintain herbarium on Flower Valley
4.    Manage and maintain wild fynbos harvesting data
5.    Assist with the implementation of resource base assessment on FYNSA supply network
6.    Assist with the testing of the Code of Practice for sustainable harvesting on the wild fynbos harvesting industry

Selection Criteria:
1.    A relevant qualification in nature conservation, biodiversity conservation, natural resource management or extension
2.    A high level of computer literacy with strong technical competence in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and data management
3.    Interest in working with conservation practitioners in a biodiversity and community development environment
4.    Language proficiency in English and Afrikaans
5.    A valid Code 08 driver’s license and own vehicle to travel (travel reimbursement provided at a specific per kilometer tariff) within the Agulhas Biodiversity Area, for the purpose of carrying out the activities under this contract
6.    Good administrative and organizational skills, with the ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines with the minimum supervision.

Duration of Contract:
This contract will commence on 5May2008 for period of one year with potential extension
