South Africa: Director: Climate Change Co-Ordination, Communication & Policy, SANBI
SANBI requires the services of a specialist in this field to provide strategic direction and co-ordinate activities to achieve SANBI’s goal to lead the country’s research, policy development and communication on the bio-impact of, as well as adaptation to climate change. This cross-cutting function is aimed at strengthening the response to climate change through identifying strategic priorities, synchronising and co-ordinating activities within SANBI’s various divisions, developing and strengthening partnerships with other organisations, and providing a framework for policy inputs and communication.

Reporting to the Chief Director: Climate Change & BioAdaptation, the successful candidate will: • ensure effective co-ordination of activities (within SANBI, the SANBI-managed network, and with key collaborating institutes) to generate research results on climate change and related global change issues with relevance to biodiversity • facilitate the development and dissemination of information products, and application of analytical tools for climate change impacts, vulnerability and adaptation for regional, national and international stakeholders, especially those that flow from SANBI co-ordinated research activities • inform regional, national and international-level policy and decision makers about the outcomes of research related to biodiversity in the context of climate change and compound threats, through written and verbal communication products • provide co-ordinated policy support to appropriate government departments, and especially DEAT, on climate change impacts, vulnerability and adaptation • advise the Chief Director: Climate Change & BioAdaptation on all issues defined above.

Appointment requires at least an MSc degree (but preferably a PhD) in a relevant discipline, backed by a strong proven track record in climate change and global change policy and research, as well as the ability to build and manage relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. Self-motivated individuals with the above skills, who are able to work with limited supervision and have at least five years’ relevant work experience in a managerial position, are encouraged to apply.

Candidates must be willing and able to travel extensively nationally and internationally, and display sound communication skills in English as well as one other official language. Further requirements for this position are substantial mentoring experience, computer literacy (MS Word suite) and well-developed budgeting and administrative abilities. The possession of a valid Code 08 (EB) driver’s license is essential.

SANBI offers all-inclusive salary packages of R540 429 per annum.

  • Limbe Wildlife Centre in SW Cameroon takes care of infant primates that are lucky enough to be rescued from the illegal pet trade. In November 2007, ACF, ERuDeF and Daniel Taylor organised an art workshop with 13 Cameroonian artists in the centre in order to raise awareness and funding for great apes conservation.
