Working for Water honours best projects
The annual Project Flagship Symposium 2007 was held at the Cedar Park Hotel conference centre in Johannesburg
during November 2007.

This is an annual event hosted by Working for Water (WfW) to acknowledge the work done by WfW project
managers and partners organisations and Departments in the fight against invasive alien plants.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, WfW National Programme Leader, Dr Guy Preston, said: “We desperately need
to accelerate the work that we do in the programme because there are lot of species coming into our country.”

Thanking the participants Preston said: “I would like to thank all the project managers who participated in this year's
event and to me all the projects are winners and I wouldn't love to be a judge tonight.”

James Jansen a project manager in Sand Bulk project in the Eastern Cape won the National Flagship Project 2007. A
thrilled Jansen said the award is an encouragement for him to work harder.

He also advised the other project managers in the programme that they must work hard and they must listen to their
area mangers if they want to be successful with their projects.

The Sand Bulk project is located in the Northwest of Port Elizabeth, along the DR01831 road that leads from
Rocklands. The Sand Bulk River Project Area supplies part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Water supply and is
bordered by the Groendal Wilderness Area.

The inaugural winners of the Project Flagship in 2006, Western Cape came second place and the third place went to
the Limpopo region.

The other regions presenting their flagship projects included Free State, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, San Parks,
Northwest, Gauteng, Vuselela and Kwazulu Natal.
San Parks also received a certificate for having the most innovative project, and Jansen received an award for being
the most enthusiastic and passionate presenter. The best presentation went to Werner Roux from Limpopo.
