Namibia: Sperrgebiet Park Delay in Limelight |

Windhoek - The delay in proclaiming the Sperrgebiet as a national park is the main challenge facing the Succulent Karoo Ecosystem Programme (Skep). This was said by Skep co-ordinator Kauna Schroeder at a recent workshop in Windhoek. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism announced in 2005 that it would proclaim the Sperrgebiet National Park but this has not yet happened. The expected proclamation was one of the reasons why Skep Namiba received funds from the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF), Schroeder said. She said the Skep programme had five components but the implementation of some of its activities was on hold pending the proclamation of the Sperrgebiet. The proposed Sperrgebiet park covers 26 000 square kilometres in south-western Namibia and it will be the second largest park in the country after the Namib-Naukluft Park. Cosmos Shilongo, a warden in the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, told the workshop that the park management had been finalised and was ready for approval. Skep is a cross-border conservation project covering the north-western part of South Africa and south-western Namibia. The Succulent Karoo plant kingdom, which covers 116 000 square kilometres, is home to 6 356 plant species, of which 40 per cent grow nowhere else. http://allafrica.com/stories/200806120660.html |
